It is thus unclear what we should think about national identities and while some political theorists show us how to reduce their dangers and realise their value, other political theorists disagree with them.² But theorists on either side of this debate. Many now note how national identities are controversial when used to justify secession, dangerous when equated with race, but valuable when used to foster unity among citizens otherwise unknown to one another.¹ Such identities are thus difficult to ignore due to their controversial nature, difficult to endorse due to their dangers and difficult to oppose due to their value. Mahatma Mohandas Gandhi’s moral and political thought and practice, and multicultural political theory and global ethics are two broad areas in which Bhikhu Parekh has made original and valuable contributions, which have been widely recognised. The activity of political philosophy involves identifying and clarifying those influences. He is simply more generous in acknowledging that fact about his work. All political theories, however original, remain complex syntheses of ideas that are derived directly or indirectly from others: Parekh’s own theory of multiculturalism is no exception.
